2004 Medusa Pig Pen Vineyard Receives 91PTS In Wine Enthusiast
Very good, savory Amador Zin, exuberantly rich in briary mountain wild blackberry, blueberry and loganberry flavors, with a huge dusting of spice: white pepper, black pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, and, for the finale, a sweet dose of crème de cassis-laced cola. Yet the wine is thoroughly dry. Shows Zin’s ability to combine rusticity with elegance. — S.H. (10/1/2007)
2004 Medusa's Reviewed by Stephen TanzerStephen Tanzer rates the first national release of Medusa with 88, 89 and 90 points! Here are the reivews
($35) Moderately saturated medium red. Perfumed aromas of red cherry, flowers and sandalwood. Broad, fat and rich, with a slightly high-toned character and some alcoholic warmth. Finishes broad and firmly tannic. This is the lowest in alcohol of this trio of zinfandels (at 14.4%) but the only wine that struck me as warm.
2004 Medusa Wines Zinfandel Old Vine Lover's Lane Vineyard Mendocino 89($35; 15.6% alcohol) Medium red. Captivating nose offers raspberry, espresso, mint, blood orange and a panoply of Indian spices. Sweet, ripe and fruit-driven; more filled in than the Pig Pen, with good ripe acidity framing and carrying the rich fruit. Cleanly made but youthfully clenched today.
2004 Medusa Wines Zinfandel Old Vine Creekside Block Bar 49 Vineyard Napa Valley 90($35; 15.4% alcohol) Superripe aromas of raspberry, licorice, blood orange, spicy underbrush and nutty oak, with hints of chocolate and espresso. Offers a liqueur-like texture and enticing sweetness but also plenty of acidity to perk up the sappy, spicy flavors of dried red fruits and dried flowers. With extended aeration the acidity threatened to become tart, but I continued to enjoy the pronounced energy and precision of the flavors here.
